8 Shooting Techniques that will Improve Your Hunting Skill

Explanation of Shooting Technique

We are repeatedly asked how one can easily remember the shooting technique. To answer the question, we have compiled the eight most important criteria for the correct shooting technique from the relevant literature and derived a scheme that is easy to remember.

Correct Shooting Techniques

In order to be able to call up a process even in stressful situations, it must be as simple as possible and of course be practiced frequently. The following points can be easily practiced at home to prepare for your next shooting.

Our 8-point routine for driven hunt shooting includes the following activities:

To put it profanely, you need hunting expectations in all situations in which you cannot be sure when and where the game will appear, especially when shooting from a movement (e.g. when stalking, approaching the hide or on driven hunts).

In the classic variant of the hunting expectation, one carries the weapon with slightly bent arms in front of the chest, the shoulder rest is at hip level and the area in front is observed via the muzzle of the weapon so that the weapon can be brought to the stop quickly if necessary to be able to set a shot.

You take a stand about shoulder-width apart and direct your hips to the point where you want to shoot the game. In this position, 60% of the weight should be on the balls of the feet, the knees are slightly bent and the upper body is slightly inclined forward so that the center of gravity lies on an imaginary line between the two feet.

Hunting expectations:

  • Advantage: By observing over the muzzle, it is always aligned with the target. If you manage to bring the shoulder rest exactly into your shoulder, you automatically bring the line of sight into the line of sight and you are immediately aligned with the target.
  • Disadvantage: The weapon is constantly pointing upwards, this can be a major safety risk if handled incorrectly and you are forced to bring the weapon to the stop by lifting the shoulder rest. This costs time and is a significant source of error.

Hunting estimate

Through experience in shooting while on the move, we have got to know another variant of the hunting expectation that has several advantages. With the modified hunting expectation, the weapon is already held at the ready and the apron is observed via the sights.

Hunting expectations:

  • Advantage: The attachment point on the shoulder does not have to be found first. The weapon constantly points in a safe direction of fire (the ground in front of the shooter).
  • Disadvantage: Because the sight is guided into the line of sight, the target must be grasped again by means of the sight and the weapon must be aimed at the target. For this reason, this variant of the hunting expectation is primarily suitable for open sights.

The handle

With your left hand, you should grasp the fore-end at the level of the fish skin with your thumb pointing forward (clamp grip). In order to be able to exercise good control, the left arm should be almost straight. Even when shooting on the driven hunt, the left hand is the lead hand.

You never pull the weapon into your shoulder with your left hand, because that leads to tearing and you also do not aim the weapon with your left hand, but with your upper body.

Stop standing

With the right hand, you grasp the handle of your weapon and pull the weapon into your shoulder. You should only use enough force to avoid cramping. If the hand opens up because you are applying so much pressure, you are pulling too hard.

The aim

The Aim

With dynamic shooting, ideally, you aim with both eyes open. If you only have optics with magnification, you probably have to close one eye, as the brain cannot superimpose the two target images. There is a simple trick for this: you cover the optics with a cloth or something similar and aims at a target with both eyes open.

The brain now superimposes the two image planes, right eye red dot, left eye surroundings, and you will be able to hit despite the hidden optics. However, in order not to be blocked in your gesture, it is important to position yourself well. A hunter must have good footwork.

Sight image

In order to burn a sight image into your brain, you calculate the allowance for your own ammunition and draw it on a game target. Now you can go to the game target with the weapon in dry training and take the various precautions. This should be repeated often enough to be able to memorize the dimensions and call them up in stressful situations.

Similar to the “swing through” shotgun shooting technique, guide the muzzle through the body of the game from behind until you have the correct lead, then bend, swing further and repeat.

The breathing

Correct breathing is essential for a precise shot. There are several breathing techniques that can be used to improve shot delivery. The effects of breathing on the hit position can be made clear to yourself very easily by taking the correct shooting position, creating a clean sight image and breathing deeply in and out.

You will find that your aiming image moves up and down with the movement of your chest. There are various breathing techniques to compensate for this effect.

Breathing technique:

Basically, you have four options for avoiding the transmission of the movement of the chest to the weapon. Option one is to exhale or inhale half of the air in your lungs and then hold your breath.

If there are two or three options, breathe in or out ¾ of the air and then hold your breath; or you shoot as soon as you get to the exact point when the chest is still as you move from inhaling to exhaling. Which of the possibilities you use to control your breathing is entirely up to you and your personal preferences and can only be determined through dry training.

Regarding the fourth variant, it should only be noted that we have rarely met a shooter personally who has mastered this technique. For this reason, we recommend using a technique at which the breath is held. Understandably, you can’t hold your breath forever before a shot.

Limit breathing pauses to three to eight seconds. Anything beyond that does not make sense, as the first symptoms of oxygen deficiency appear after just eight seconds and a precise shot is no longer possible.

Furthermore, it has never helped to “force” the shot if you want to fire a shot while holding your breath. It is better to let your finger rest, concentrate on the shot again and then fire a meaningful and above all precise shot.

Trigger control

When shooting dynamically, the trigger should be in the middle part of the index finger. Similar to shotgun shooting, when shooting on a driven hunt you have to pull the trigger decisively without tearing through. After the shot has broken, pull the trigger forward again to the pressure point and repeat.

Through the optics, one observes the shot, the hit position and then the drawing of the game.

There are several thoughts to this point. You can only get consistently good shooting results if you always reproduce the correct course of action. To do this, you have to practice the points above over and over again. It is said that after 1000 repetitions a course of action is anchored in the muscle memory.

It is important to bring the practiced courses of action into a routine sequence and to anchor them in memory. Keep in mind that a driven hunt-shooting routine could look like this: Stand, stop, shoot, swing, repeat and then back to the beginning.

Importance of choosing the right weapon

Every hunter wants to buy the best weapon. But for a beginner hunter, it must be remembered that several criteria come into play when it comes time to buy a hunting weapon. The choice of the device must be made according to the type of hunting and the game you want to harvest.

We will not advise the same thing to a young person, a woman or a man.

Tips for choosing hunting rifle

In the world of hunting rifles, there are four calibers, the 410, 28, 20, and the famous 12. I recommend the 410 for young people and women because it is not too heavy to carry around for a whole day. It is best to use it further from an urban center, where the game will be less fierce.

In the case of the 28, it is more powerful than the 410. The only small problem is the availability of ammunition. So, it is better to plan before moving away from the big centers.

For the two other models available, the expert frankly admits his preference for the 20 calibers. The 20 caliber is the best choice for small game hunting in United State. Ammunition is easy to find and it is legal to use it for hunting migratory birds, deer and even black bears.

Finally, there is the famous 12 caliber. This is the best rifle for hunting migratory birds. It is found in a two-gun model, pump or semi-automatic, at the hunter’s choice.
