We know that a range hood is an essential element in a kitchen because it allows us to evacuate the fumes loaded with grease and to eliminate acrid odors. Faced with a very wide range, the choice is often difficult. Before you buy a range hood, you should consider some specific point of features:
The suction power is directly responsible for the purification capacity of the air. The suction power is adjustable on different levels. Prefer those models that can offer a spare part that can measure at about six or eight times the volume of the room air.
The minimum power to be sought for medium-sized kitchens is around 400/500 cubic meters of air per hour based on this parameter it evaluates your real need. The size of the hood directly affects its suction power, so it must be the same or larger than the hob.
The consumption of these appliances is not exciting and often there are hoods in energy class E or F. But consider that, the time in which these appliances will remain in operation will not be significant, and the bill at the end of the month should not be affected much.
To calculate how much the use of the range hood can cost you, you can refer to the energy label. On it, you will find the estimate of the kWh consumed in a year of use. The calculation is made considering an hour of use of the hood and two hours of switching on the lighting per day.
Different type of filter used
The function of these filters is to capture the fats that rise to the hood sucked together with the fumes, and prevent them from accumulating on the internal parts especially the electric ones like the motor damaging them.
There are many different types of filters used range hood models. The most commonly used filters are the aluminum filters, they can trap the grease and pollutants effectively. Aluminum filters are dishwasher safe. After clean thoroughly, the aluminum filters are also reusable and provide you long service.
Carbon filters are not reusable but it perfect for ductless or recirculating range hoods because they can trap most irritant grime and dirt perfectly. Carbon filters need to be changed three times every year when it completely soaked.
Lighting and design
A good range hood is equipped with lighting that is sufficient to light up the kitchen or at least the cooking oven perfectly. Most modern Range hoods are electronic that’s mean they can be controlled remotely or touch button, while the past ones that are electro-mechanical do not have these features.
The kitchen hood also performs the function of illuminating the hob, which can also vary greatly from model to model. The hoods of the previous generation mounted small resistance bulbs, resulting in a lighting with warm tones, but not particularly intense.
Modern cooker hoods have switched to bulbs without electrical resistance, halogen or LED. Both of these types of light bulbs offer considerable energy savings compared to old-style bulbs with undefeated LED lighting systems in terms of energy efficiency. There are also considerable differences in the quality of the lighting.
The aesthetics of the hoods are very varied and designed to please users with different tastes. It is worth considering if only the extractor hood is able to give greater value to the kitchen and its furniture and if the style matches well with the type of furniture already present in your modular.
The kitchen hood is generally a rather noisy appliance, like all the machines that provide for air movement. The sound emission is naturally much strong and powerful. You will normally find the minimum and maximum noise levels expressed in dB.
Indicatively, the average sound emissions of a kitchen hood can range from 60 to 70 dB, while at minimum suction levels the noise can drop to just 40 dB. There are some ventilation systems that allow further noise abatement, but normally include additional masonry work with consequent rising costs and installation complication.
When you buy the hood, it should never be larger or smaller than the hob. If you attach the range hood to the wall, the most important thing is the width and height of the niche in which the new hood is to be fitted. The respective cabinet dimensions are important for flat screen, substructure and built-in hoods. Conventional extractor hoods are wide from 30 inches to 42 inches.
Island hoods and lift hoods usually have individual dimensions. They hang from the corner and in many cases are either round or square.
The auto-switch-off function is mostly automated: normally associated with the maximum suction power level. This automatically turns off or lowers the level after a certain period of time. This is a characteristic feature of medium-high range cooker hoods especially those models that are more energy-saving.
The integrated timer instead is a welcome touch for those who cook a lot or those who tend to forget to keep track of the cooking time of a dish. The hoods with integrated timers naturally have a greater number of commands, and there may also be a small LCD display for programming and displaying the elapsed time. In addition to the timer, the LCD display also allows you to program and display the time.
Another function that can be found on the hood is the indication of the anti-grease filter status. This can be a simple light or an icon that appears on the display, which indicates when it is time to clean the filters.
Once you have identified the right hood for your kitchen in terms of dimensions, suction capacity, etc, you will also need to consider other factors regarding the performance of your new hood. Specifically, you will need to consider the number and type of filters together with their filtration efficiency. The type and quality of the lighting of the hob and finally the level of acoustic emissions produced by the hood in operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How to install a range hood properly?
If you are replacing an old hood with a new one, you will of course have to disassemble the one already installed before proceeding to place the new purchase. On the other hand, if you need to create all the housings from scratch, take into account the enclosed instructions to understand where to place the vent.
Usually, inside the package, there is a template: just place it on the wall and draw its shape, before proceeding with the drill. At this point, insert the ventilation pipe, which must end outside the house.
Mark with a pencil all the positions in which to place the cable and screws, so as not to do things randomly and find yourself with a hood-mounted crooked. Then place the support screws in the wall, making sure to make them penetrate far enough.
Now connect the cables from the wall to the hood, taking care to associate the black and white ones and to put the green on the screw in charge, located inside the hood. Then place the filters and the appropriate gaskets, then turn on the power to check their correct operation.
How to fix the range hood that isn’t working?
There can be different types of problems concerning the malfunctioning of the hood. If it does not start, the first step is to check that the electrical system is working and therefore that the plug is properly inserted. If the hood does not start, the problem could be related to the control buttons or even to the electronic board itself.
In this case, it will be necessary to replace the defective component. If the hood starts but does not suck, the cause could be the presence of dirty filters or even a motor failure. In the first case, it will be enough to carry out a good cleaning, in the second you will be forced to replace the piece.
How to maintain your range hood?
Cleaning does not quickly become a chore, you must maintain your extractor hood regularly. If most of the fat-saturated odors are sucked away, the fact remains that a small part escapes the extraction of air and settles on the hood. For cleaning, your hood must be off and you will proceed as follows:
If the surfaces of your hood are made of stainless steel, you will use a non-abrasive sponge and a mixture of hot water and washing-up liquid. When the walls are completely degreased, all you have to do is rinse them and wipe them with a soft cloth. There are also commercially available special products for the maintenance of stainless steel.
If the surfaces of your hood are painted, you will proceed in the same way. However, not to use stainless steel products. For the glass parts (if your hood is fitted with one), you can use a special glass cleaner. The use of a glass scraper is prohibited.
For the part with the control buttons, also take a wet cloth, but wrung well so as to avoid any penetration of moisture which could damage the electronic part of your device. For the filters, you will have the choice between a hand wash and a machine wash. If you notice that your filters are very dirty, do not put them in the dishwasher at the same time as your dishes.
It is therefore preferable to degrease your filters by leaving them to soak in very hot water with washing-up liquid. You can then brush them to remove all traces of grease. If you still cannot completely clean your filters, you can get a special product that dissolves grease in the market.
To avoid this additional work, it is strongly recommended to take care to maintain the filters very regularly, especially if you often fry food. Finally, it is important that the filters are replaced only when they are perfectly dry.
There are many different designs for both the recirculation and exhaust hoods, which are suitable for different facilities and structural conditions. A classic extractor hood should be a little wider than the hob underneath so that the vapors are optimally extracted even under influences. In tight spaces, prospective customers should look for special models.
