What price are you willing to pay for a good cooker hood? It is a useful accessory to keep the air pure and pleasant even in the smallest kitchens with poor ventilation. Often not an exception in the city mini apartments.
Every serious cook knows the necessity of having a high quality range hood within their kitchen. A high-quality range hood will remove perfectly the smoke, odor heat and grease from the air in your kitchen. So you and your guests can breathe easier and you can cook in without boring. But with all of the options available selecting the right range hood can be a critical task.
What size range hood will you need
First, you need to decide what size range hood you’ll need. For hoods that are mounted against a wall, so you will want to have your hood be equal to or just larger than your cooktop. So it overlaps three inches on each side. It’s important to have this overlap because the larger the canopy area of your hood the better it can trap unwanted grease, heat, smoke and odor t out of your kitchen.
The effectiveness of the Extractor fan
When you buy a range hood it is the most important part the rate at which smoke and airborne grease are removed from the kitchen. Very powerful fans become noisy and unable to read book or watching TV in the same room. And lower fans can’t trap heat properly, so you might select a balance range hood. But you should see that it has the capacity to clean the environment completely at least eight times in an hour.
Different type of filter used
There are many different types of filters used of range hood models. The most commonly used filters are the aluminum filters, they can trap the grease and pollutants effectively. Aluminum filters can be washed with ease in a dishwasher. The aluminum filters are reusable after being cleaned thoroughly and provide you long service. Carbon filters are not reusable but it perfect for ductless or recirculating range hoods because they can trap most irritant grime and dirt perfectly. Carbon filters need to be changed three times every year when it completely soaked.
Lighting And controlling system
A good range hood is equipped with lighting that is sufficient to light up the kitchen or at least the cooking oven perfectly. Most modern Range hoods are electronic that’s mean they can be controlled remotely or touch button, while the primitive ones that are electro-mechanical do not have these features.

Decisive factors for choosing the range hood
Before proceeding with our purchase guide, we must specify what type of hoods we will deal with here. We have chosen to dedicate ourselves here to examining the extractor hoods, ie those that can be connected to a drain pipe that conveys the air drawn in from the kitchen to the outside. We favor this type of hoods for their greater diffusion and above all efficiency, reserving the right to speak in the future also of air-operated filtering hoods. In many cases, a fume hood can also be used in the filtering version with the purchase, separately, of the necessary accessory kit.
The first considerations that you will need to make in choosing a cooker hood will have to help you find a suitable model for your kitchen. In this case, we are not referring to the style of the furniture. The features to pay attention to are of course the dimensions of the hood, which must be commensurate with both the hob and the other furniture. Secondly, you will have to take care of the suction capacity of the hood, given that the greater the suction capacity, the greater the size of the kitchen in which it will be installed.
Let’s start by considering the width of the hood: this must be equal or in any case not less than the width of the hob, so as to have the security that it can intercept and aspirate the fumes produced by whatever fire is in use. You can find hoods a little less than 60 cm up to “extra large” 120 cm models. Indicatively the same principle also applies to the depth of the hood, at least in the case of a model with a rather traditional design, which overhangs and covers exactly the same area as the hob.
However, the most recent developments in design have brought about a further evolution. In fact, new models are spreading which, despite a small depth, manage to effectively suck up the fumes produced by the cookers. The current hoods can have depths even lower than just 35 cm and reach up to 55 cm, the standard size of a hob.
Finally, even in height, it is possible to find a certain variability: it can range from 60 to over 150 cm, and in many cases the fireplace can be extended to adapt to any kitchen.
Once you have identified the right hood for your kitchen in terms of dimensions and suction capacity. You will also need to consider other factors regarding the performance of your new hood. Specifically, you will need to consider the number and type of filters together with their filtration efficiency, the type and quality of the lighting of the hob and finally the level of acoustic emissions produced by the hood in operation.
All kitchen hoods have a variable number of grease filters depending on the size: from a minimum of one filter panel to a maximum of four in the largest hoods. The function of these filters is to capture the fats that rise to the hood sucked together with the fumes, and prevent them from accumulating on the internal parts, especially the electric ones like the motor, damaging them. There are different types of filters, some perishable, others permanent: among the first we mention the acrylic filters, which are usually found on lower range hoods and should be replaced periodically. The permanent filters are instead made of metal, aluminum or steel, and have the great advantage of being able to be washed simply in the dishwasher, without loss of effectiveness over time.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the hood filters you can refer again to the energy label: here the efficiency class of filtering of fats is indicated, as usual on a scale from A to G. The hoods in efficiency class A will succeed in block more than 90% of the fats, and can therefore ensure the correct operation of the engine longer.
Kitchen range hood lighting
The kitchen hood also performs the function of illuminating the hob, which can also vary greatly from model to model. The hoods of the previous generation mounted small resistance bulbs, resulting in a lighting with warm tones, but not particularly intense. Modern cooker hoods (also thanks to European legislation), have switched to bulbs without electrical resistance, halogen or LED. Both of these types of light bulbs offer considerable energy savings compared to old-style bulbs, with undefeated LED lighting systems in terms of energy efficiency. There are also considerable differences in the quality of the lighting: halogen bulbs and LEDs offer light with colder shades, and in general more intense than the resistance bulb.
On the energy label you will find useful information also for assessing lighting efficiency: the luminous efficiency class is also expressed on a scale from A to G, and illustrates the relationship between lighting and absorbed power. A hood with a high luminous efficiency class effectively illuminates the hob with reduced consumption compared to hoods in the lower range. Attention, therefore: the luminous efficiency range does not indicate how much light the hood lamps can produce, but only the consumption deriving from the use of the light integrated in the hood!
Noisy kitchen hood
The kitchen hood is generally a rather noisy appliance, like all the machines that provide for air movement. The sound emission is naturally much stronger the more powerful the hood suction is, and in models with more speed you will normally find the minimum and maximum noise levels expressed in dB. Indicatively, the average sound emissions of a kitchen hood can range from 60 to 70 dB, while at minimum suction levels the noise can drop to just 40 dB.
There are some ventilation systems that allow further noise abatement, but normally include additional masonry work, with consequent rising costs and installation complication. With some hoods it is in fact possible to install the motor in a gap in the wall or even outside the house: this obviously greatly reduces the noise, making it almost imperceptible.
The noise level is another piece of information that can be found on the energy label: the value you will see expressed represents the weighted average of the values measured at minimum and at maximum suction power. Therefore keep in mind that the hood at maximum power will certainly be noisier than indicated!
The cooker hood has a more or less small number of integrated controls. In the simplest models you will find only two buttons or switches: one to turn the hood light on and off, the other to turn the fan on and off, without the possibility of adjusting the speed. In the more and more advanced models there are also controls to adjust the suction speed of the hood and / or the intensity of the lighting. The best models also offer a “boost” button that allows you to operate the fan at a particularly high speed, usually for a limited period of time (10 minutes). A further variable is then the type of controls, which also denotes the level of sophistication of the hood. There are basically three types of buttons that you can find on the kitchen hood:
Electromechanical buttons: classic snap or slide switches, they are the most economical type
Electric push-buttons: these are push-buttons which simply need to be pressed once or several times to obtain the desired effect
Touch buttons: the most modern “touch” controls, in which a physical button is not there and it is sufficient to place your finger on the stamped symbols
Kitchen hood touch controls Usually the type of pushbutton panel goes hand in hand with the overall quality of the hood, and consequently with its price: the cheaper models can still mount simple electromechanical pushbuttons, while the most sophisticated hoods with a neat design present now almost always a touch panel.
In some cases, a hood can also be equipped with a remote control, in combination or as an alternative to the “on board” commands. It may be the case, for example, of those hoods that require the installation of the motor in the wall or outside the wall.
Cooker hood clock In addition to lighting and ventilation, a kitchen hood can also have other functions. The two most common are the auto-shutdown and the integrated timer.
The auto-switch-off function is mostly automated: normally associated with the maximum suction power level, this automatically turns off or lowers the level after a certain period of time. Understandably, this is a characteristic feature of medium-high range cooker hoods, especially those models that are more energy-saving.
The integrated timer instead is a welcome touch for those who cook a lot or those who tend to forget to keep track of the cooking time of a dish. The hoods with integrated timers naturally have a greater number of commands, and in some cases there may also be a small LCD display for programming and displaying the elapsed time. In addition to the timer, the hoods with LCD display also allow you to program and display the time.
Another function that can be found on the hood is the indication of the anti-grease filter status: this can be a simple light, or an icon that appears on the display, which indicates when it is time to clean the filters.
Finally, the evaluation of the consumption of a kitchen hood is a sensitive topic: both because electricity consumption entails an expense, and because of the increasing attention to energy saving as a behavior that has a positive impact on the environment. Wishing therefore to talk about consumption, the considerations to make concern the absorption of the engine, the estimated annual consumption and the range of energy efficiency.
Of course, the more powerful an electric motor is, the greater its consumption. As an indication, the kitchen hood motors can have a power ranging from 140 to 400 W: the engine power obviously plays a role in determining the suction capacity of a hood. A more powerful engine will in fact be able to generate more suction, and will therefore be found on hoods suitable for larger rooms, while a weaker motor will generate sufficient suction for a very small kitchen. You will therefore have to accept first of all the idea that if you have a very large kitchen your hood will need a powerful motor, with some consequences on electricity consumption.
In calculating how much the use of the range hood can cost you, you can refer to the energy label. On it, you will find the estimate of the kWh consumed in a year of use. The calculation is made considering an hour of use of the hood and two hours of switching on the lighting per day. The actual consumption will therefore depend on your frequency and mode of use. If you want to make a calculation of how much you can cost per year the use of the hood, multiply the kWh / year indicated on the label by the rate per kWh applied by your energy supplier.
Energy efficiency class
Finally, the energy efficiency class will help you understand if the cooker hood you are considering has a good consumption/performance ratio. Not necessarily, in fact, high suction performance requires greater energy expenditure, indeed technological developments are moving in the opposite direction. The scale can go from the letter A to the G or, at the discretion of the producer, from A + to F.
The letter A or A + indicates the minor energy consumption, which you can verify by looking at the box of the annual consumption of which we have just spoken. If associated with a high class of fluid-dynamic efficiency, the energy efficiency class A or A + will reveal an excellent quality cooker hood with low consumption. However, cases are more frequent, especially in the medium and low price ranges, of cooker hoods or very efficient from the point of view of consumption but not of aspiration, or aspiration but not consumption.
