How to choose a table saw
Table saws offer a lot of functions that should promote optimal sawing and your safety. In the following section, we present the different product criteria and explain what they are all about. This should make it easier for you to choose your future saw.
The performance of your table saw is a crucial factor. For attractive sawing work, we recommend at least 1,200 watts and a high idle speed. A gentle start-up is very useful to protect your saw’s motor.
The motor is the heart of the table saw. The best accessories are of no use if the performance of the engine is too weak. It always matters what you want to saw. The stronger or thicker the pieces to be sawn, the more power you need. Too little power can lead to unclean edges or tilted saw pieces.
Another important factor is the idle speed. This depends on the engine power and indicates how fast the saw blade can rotate. The same applies here: the higher the better to ensure clean sawing. It should be at least 3,000 revolutions per minute.
Some table saws have controllable motors. With these, you can continuously adjust the speed to the saw piece. This enables you to work ideally – tailored to the different materials.
A nice additional function is a gentle motor start, also called “soft start”. Your table saw does not start with full power, but slowly increases to full power. This increases the life of your table saw. The important thing is the power of the engine and the idling speed. In addition, attention can be paid to controllable motors and a smooth motor start.
A stable stand is important so that table saw can cut safely and precisely. There is a fundamental distinction between table saws that are equipped with a base or not. Both variants have their advantages and disadvantages in terms of precision and mobility.
A stable base is usually installed in high-quality saws. The safe stand ensures that the work surface does not vibrate when sawing – an essential aspect when working with millimeter precision. With cheap models, the substructure may not be particularly stable. Wobbly feet or a warped frame can then lead to poor sawing results.
Again, you should consider how you want to work with the saw. If you already have a stable work table that is at the correct height, you can do without a base. If not, you should opt for a table saw with a stable frame.
Whether you want to be mobile with the saw, there are two options: Either you buy a table saw without a base, as these are lighter and not so bulky, or you choose a circular saw with a base that has rollers. So you can easily move the saw back and forth in the workshop or on the construction site.
The value and size of the saw blades are important factors in the sawing process. Not every saw blade is intended for every material. A fine saw blade is suitable for hardwoods as well as metal and plastic. You can saw lumber and firewood with a rough blade. The finer the saw blade, the cleaner your cutting edge will be.
The quality and design of the saw blades are decisive for your sawing success. You usually get one or more saw blades when you buy your table saw. In order to achieve optimal results, you should always keep in mind that the shape and size of the table saw blades should be based on your goals.
However, the saw blade diameter for the saw is defined by the manufacturer. Therefore, before buying, you should look in which area the table saw is located. In general, the larger the saw blade, the thicker workpieces can be cut.
Another important aspect is the maximum cutting height (also called cutting depth). It provides information on the maximum size of the workpiece to be sawn. A large cutting height also ensures more freedom when sawing.
Most table saws have a cutting height of at least 75 millimeters. You should use this value as a guide. Professional devices can also offer cutting heights of around 100 millimeters.
The inclination of the saw blade is also important so that you can make miter cuts, the circular saw blade should tilt from 0 to 45 °. Also make sure that you can adjust the inclination of the saw blade continuously to be able to work more flexibly.
More expensive models can have a larger cutting angle, for example from -1 to 47 °. These saws have the so-called undercut function, with which you can ensure almost seamless transitions between different workpieces in furniture construction.
Good equipment has many advantages. A table enlargement offers you more flexibility, the sliding carriage more precision and the suction function ensures a clear view. Many table saws now offer a table enlargement. This can be particularly useful if you want to work with quite long workpieces.
Table saws with sliding carriages are suitable for sawing workpieces at right angles and enable safe and very precise work. The workpiece is “pushed” through the saw blade. The sliding table is not included in many table saws from the lower price range. You can also build this yourself. The opposite is a train function. The saw blade is pulled through the workpiece.
Most table saws today are equipped with a suction function for wood chips. As a rule, these offer the option of connecting an industrial vacuum cleaner or the like.
The extraction has two advantages in particular: firstly, dust and sawdust are sucked in directly when sawing. This gives you a clear view of the workpiece and keeps your saw clean. On the other hand, you don’t breathe in dust, which is good for your health.
It is particularly important that the accessories are of high quality. The cheap table saws usually offer similar extras to the higher quality models. However, there are sometimes striking differences in quality. The various stops, which are an accessory for almost all saws, are essential for precise work.
The rip fence is primarily used to align workpieces at an exact 90 ° angle and to cut out several identical small pieces from a large piece of wood without having to measure again with each cut. This is worthwhile, for example, for parquet work.
The angle stop enables you to make exact angle cuts. You can also set the desired angle here and then cut several workpieces at the same angle. This also enables you to make miter cuts.
Careless use of a table saw can be very dangerous. For the sake of your health, you should pay attention to certain safety features. Proper clothing and protective equipment is essential for safe sawing. Avoid gloves, long-sleeved clothing, or jewelry. These could be caught by the saw blade!
You should also always wear safety glasses and hearing protection. Chips could fly in your direction and some table saws are very loud. To avoid permanent strain on your ears, you should protect them. If your table saw does not have a chip extraction function or you do not use it, a mouth guard is the method of choice. So you don’t breathe in chips or dust.
